Upcoming paper

Of course the big event this last week for many families was the first day of school! Find out who the new staff are at UCHS, UPS and Luseland School and how enrolment numbers compare to last year in next week’s issue of the Unity Wilkie Press-Herald.

Along with the article, and photos from the first day, you can read about:

  • a Service to Children award given to one of Unity’s long-serving teachers;
  • a major scholarship won by one of this year’s UCHS grads;
  • a reunion at Winter, SK; and you can see
  • photos of locals enjoying the visit of the Family Fun Circus to Unity the last week of August.

More upcoming events are listed in the ads (and the minimum details can also be found by clicking the Calendar tab in the menu at the top of this page).

Even if somehow you had missed all the back-to-school talk or had forgotten when you got up Tuesday morning this week that students would be returning to classes, at St. Peter’s School in Unity, the bikes in the bick rack and the school bus pulled up with lights flashing and its STOP sign out would have let you know school days were here again!

Watch for scam job postings

When someone, who is not a regular advertiser and does not represent a known business in one of our local or area communities, calls the Unity-Wilkie Press-Herald to place an advertisement, one way to check the authenticity and genuineness of the caller is to ask for credit card information. Then the cost of the ad is charged upfront, before the ad runs in the paper.

Another standard safeguard is to ensure we have complete contact information, including a snail mail address and a telephone number.

In late August, a “John ***”  wanted to run an ad In the Press-Herald for a customer service rep, offering a monthly salary of $3,290. Applicants were to contact him by email.

“John” was ready to provide credit card information as soon as we could come up with the price. A local street address in Unity, SK and a 306-228- phone number were given.

A few details, such as someone in the background telling the man on the phone what to say, made the Press-Herald staff suspicious. A reverse lookup of the telephone number found that it belonged to a resident we know. When we called him, he knew nothing about the ad or the John who had called our office.

More than likely, had the ad run, anyone applying for the advertised position would have been asked for their bank account information – supposedly for deposit of paycheques but really so the scammers could drain whatever funds the person already had in there. As well, ithey may have planned to use the names, addresses and SIN numbers of applicants in an identity theft scheme.

The incident was reported to the police, and we have since learned of attempts by the culprits to run the same or similar ads in other Saskatchewan newspapers.

Remember to never, ever give out bank account or other financial information to someone you do not know and have not thoroughly researched!

Note: We are not using “John’s” last name online as the name may belong to some innocent man somewhere whose identity and credit card information were stolen.

Enjoy and be informed!

With another storm threatening July 23, the fence line at the Cardinals’ home playoff game was unusually empty as can be seen in this photo of Francis Kiefer on the pitcher’s mound.

Next week’s paper preview

Well … first of all, a warning that there is a sad mistake on the front page of the June 23 Unity Wilkie Press-Herald. After 105 years, Landis School closes its doors at the end of this month, never again to hear the laughter and chatter of children echoing down the halls.  Unfortunately the photos of the current staff and students, and the compilation of memories from former students, is headlined Luseland Memories.  Our apologies to staff and students of the Landis and the Luseland schools!

Despite, the error in the headline, the Landis School memories are well worth reading! Along with those, enjoy:

  • a profile on Unity United Church minister Louise Robson, who is retiring after 20 years as an ordained minister;
  • a look at this year’s Unity Minor Ball softball teams;
  • coverage of the Sask Seniors Assoc. rally held in Unity May 22;
  • a report on the Luseland pool opening.

The June 23 issue is also the annual “grad issue” – look to see which kids you know are already graduating from high school! In addition, students from all three area high schools went to Battleford June 12 to be recognized at the Living Sky School Division Student Hall of Fame banquet and we have listings of the award winners.
