auto thefts in West Central Saskatchewan

The Unity SK RCMP Detachment began a series of auto theft investigations November 24, 2014, after a Denzil area man discovered a number of vehicles in his yard and some unknown males on his property looking in outbuildings. The man confronted the males and, as they were leaving the property, he was struck by one of the vehicles.

Unity RCMP located the vehicles in the Evesham district minutes later and the subjects fled. It was learned the vehicles headed through Unity where a 2014 Chevrolet “Duck Commander” edition truck was stolen, but not reported until morning. The trucks were located minutes later enroute to Red Pheasant Cree Nation where the stolen vehicles fled the responding Battlefords RCMP members. One of the trucks stolen that night, a black Dodge 4×4 was abandoned by the subjects who fled the vehicle.

Since that time, Unity RCMP has been assisting Battlefords RCMP in the investigation of the auto thefts. Members of the Unity/Wilkie/Macklin RCMP have made patrols of the Red Pheasant Cree Nation and have recovered numerous vehicles that were reported stolen from: Maidstone, Biggar, Unity, Provost Alberta, North Battleford and Cut Knife, as well as a finding a stolen snowmobile and trailer from the Battlefords.

RCMP search turns up stolen vehicles and this snowmobile.

The Unity RCMP have used snowmobiles to locate many of the vehicles that have been recovered in varying condition from the secluded areas of Red Pheasant Cree Nations.

Efforts are being made to recover those vehicles with salvage value higher than the cost of recovery. As the pictures show, many of the vehicles have been stripped of their wheels, and various drive-line parts which it is believed have been sold by the thieves.

The RCMP have made some arrests in relation to the possession of some of the stolen vehicles, but the matter remains under investigation at this time. Several of the subjects involved in the thefts have been determined to be young offenders, and their names will not be published due to this fact.

During this time there have been other thefts in the community as a 2015 Chevrolet Silverado and a 2006 Chevrolet Malibu were stolen from the Macklin area and used in a number of mischiefs before being burnt near Macklin and Provost respectively.

vehicle theft investigationsInvestigation and the assistance of witnesses in the area have resulted in the formal charges of three males from Macklin. Charged in relation to the thefts are Mitch Mitchell, Quinton Banfield and Brandon Gette. Mitchell was held in for court December 29, 2014 in North Battleford, Gette and Banfield are to be in court in Unity later this month.

Unity hosts international junior hockey game!

With nearby Kindersley, Saskatchewan hosting the 2014 World Junior A Challenge hockey series, Unity was chosen to host the pre-tournament game between Canada East and Russia. The game was played in front of about 700 local and visiting hockey fans the evening of December 12.

Unity Composite High School’s Journalism class also live streamed the game, complete with pre- and post-game interviews and “Coaches’ Corner” segments between periods.

Russia dominated play early in the first period, scoring the first goal only a minute and 35 seconds after the opening faceoff.

Although Canada bounced back to have numerous scoring chances, outshooting the Russians 33 to 23, Russia’s goalie kept them in the game for the ultimate 5-2 win. Goalie Anton Krasotkin was one of the more sought-after players after the game when it was time to sign autographs.

Enjoy these photos from the game and other events of the evening. Please see the December 22nd issue of the Unity-Wilkie Press-Herald for additional photos and coverage of the events.

UCHS presents plays this evening!

Providing food for thought this Christmas season, UCHS drama students will present Modern Day Match Girl, along with a “silly” sci-fi spoof,  Space Women From The Planet Limbo, this evening at the Unity high school senior gym at 7 pm. The first public performances took place yesterday evening.

Almost as soon as school starts after the summer holidays, students at Unity Composite High School audition for acting parts and volunteer to help with stage setup, lights, costume and makeup for the December drama productions.

Weekly — and, as it gets closer to the performance dates, even more frequent — rehearsals means hours and hours of work are put in by the students, all in hopes of ultimately delighting their future audience of friends, family and community members.

This year’s bill is once again a doubleheader with “a silly spoof” written by the irrepressible Greg Bick and a more thoughtful piece presented by Crystal Gilbert and Kyle Wood

The Modern Match Girl, written and directed by Gilbert and Wood, is a modern adaptation of Hans Christian Anderson’s The Little Match Girl. Gilbert said the adaptation “features a play within a play as well as shadow puppets illustrating the young girl’s rich imagination. While the play touches on the Christmas spirit and the act of giving hope to our neighbours, it also reminds us to be thankful for what we have and to cherish family.”

UCHS drama, December 2014The 14 member cast is composed of students from Grade 7 up, and includes Grade 12 student Danielle Irons acting in her last year at UCHS.

Roxane Mamer, along with Gilbert, has been helping the crew create the sets and props for the play. The directors are also pleased this year to welcome Mrs. Stang to the team as the music specialist.

Bick’s Space Women From The Planet Limbo will be sure to generate some chuckles. Bick said, “I wanted it to look hokey like the 1950s sci-fi … (like) aluminium foil on the robot. And it’s a spoof so it’s going to be silly.” If you are familiar with the Stars Wars movies and the Star Trek series, listen closely for a few inside jokes mixed into the plot.

Outlandish costumes, wild makeup and coloured lighting will give theatregoers a visual feast as well. Even the crew will be dressed differently than usual, in keeping with the science fiction theme.

Both plays will be performed at UCHS Tuesday, Dec. 9, and Wednesday, Dec. 10, with show time at 7 p.m. each night.

“Immunize or Mask” in health care facilities

Starting Dec. 1, if you haven’t had your flu shot, you will have to wear a mask when you enter any Heartland Health Region facilities or sites where patient care and service is provided, r any other health care facilities in the Province of Saskatchewan.

If you are not immunized against the flu, you will have to keep wearing a mask while in patient care and service locations until April 3, 2015, the approximate end of the annual influenza season.

The expectation to ‘Immunize or Mask’ applies to all members of the public who come into hospitals, long-term care facilities, primary health care sites, public health locations and other sites where patients, residents or clients typically access health region care or services. It includes common areas in these facilities such as hallways, lobbies and waiting rooms, as well as patient rooms, wards, units, departments and other areas where patients, residents or clients typically access care or services.

All HHR employees and other health professionals, including physicians, are required to have their seasonal influenza immunization or wear a mask while in the health region’s patient care locations. Volunteers, students, vendors and contractors must also wear a mask in Heartland Health Region’s patient care locations if they have not received their seasonal influenza immunization. In the community, healthcare workers are required to be immunized or wear a mask when delivering care or service to patients or clients at home, or in public locations such as Wellness Clinics.

The requirement to be immunized or wear a mask is part of a new province-wide influenza immunize or mask policy in effect in all Saskatchewan health regions and the Saskatchewan Cancer Agency. The purpose is to further protect the health and safety of patients. It also serves to further protect healthcare workers, their colleagues, families, friends, and communities.

Dr. David Torr, consulting medical health officer for the region says “The number one prevention against influenza is to get your influenza vaccination every year. It is the best protection for you, your family, friends and communities from influenza.” Although the immunization cannot guarantee that you will not get the flu this season, it greatly reduces the chance you will get it and, if you do get the flu, the vaccine will likely reduce the length of time that you will suffer from the symptoms, as well as the strength of the illness. With vaccine, you will also spread less of the virus for less time to those around you, if you get it. It is also very important for everyone to always practise proper hand hygiene and cough etiquette, and not to visit patients and health care facilities when you are ill or just recovering.

It is not too late to get your flu shot. In Macklin, a clinic will be held at St. Joseph’s Health Centre Dec. 16 from 10 a.m. to noon and 1 to 3 p.m. Unity’s December clinic will be Dec. 18, at the health centre, from a to 7 p.m. From January 2015 to the end of March 2015, flu shots are available at your nearest public health office.

In Heartland Health Region facilities, surgical/procedure masks will be available for individuals who have chosen not to be immunized against influenza. Gel hand sanitizer, an additional tool to further minimize the spread of infections, is located throughout HHR sites. Instructions on how to properly put on and take off the masks will be posted.
