Celtic band coming to Unity for Celebrate Unity 2018

The date is set, the hall and caterer have been booked and the chosen entertainment has confirmed their attendance. Planning for Celebrate Unity 2018, to be held Monday, March 5, at the Unity Community Centre, is well underway.

Along with recognition of community volunteers, new and long-time Unity businesses, and exemplary service award winners; a delicious meal and good conversation with friends and neighbours, prepare to be well entertained. Performing at Celebrate Unity 2018 will be West of Mabou, an acclaimed Saskatchewan ceilidh band of five. Your toes will be tapping to the lively Celtic music they perform.

One of CBC Saskatchewan’s 2017 Artists to Watch, West of Mabou performs lively dance music steeped in the rich traditions of Scottish and Cape Breton fiddle and pipe tunes.

Almost all the pieces are in place for Celebrate Unity 2018. All that remains is for the Unity and District Chamber of Commerce to send out the invitation letters to this year’s selected honourees. Nominations are still open for the exemplary service awards.

West of Mabou band members are Scott Benson and Roberta Wallace, each on fiddle; Alex Rasmussen who plays pipes and whistles, Justin Easton on guitar and Jared Dormer on the drums. Each of the members is an experienced performer in his or her own right, having performed at festivals, competitions, pubs and ceilidhs around the world, including the World Pipe Band Championships, Canmore Highland Games, Western Canadian Music Awards, Canada Cup of Curling and the Ford World Men’s Curling Championships.

Together they have achieved such honours as making the Top Celtic Bands of 2017 on the Irish & Celtic Music Podcast based in Austin, Tex.; debuting at number seven on the National Folk/Roots/Blues Chart, peaking at number 21 on the iTunes Canada World Music Chart and in first spot on the CFBX – Kamloops, B.C. – Folk/Roots/Blues Chart and getting international airtime in places as diverse as Maui, Hawaii; Glasgow, Scotland; Spall, Germany; Port Hawkesbury, Canada; Reading, England; and Indianapolis, Indiana. Their CD also made Album of the Week on the Blues and Roots Worldwide Radio Network.

The band has received glowing reviews, with comments such as “Lively, Celtic music highlighted by its virtuoso fiddle players and jubilant attitude” from Bucketlist Music Reviews in Montreal, Que., and “Great band. Great CD … I can’t stop listening” from Calum Macdonald of the Celticset in Scotland.

UNITY SK RCMP REPORTS for January 9 to 15, 2018

RCMP received a report of a deer carcass on Highway 14.  Members contacted the Department of Highways to remove the animal from the roadway.

Police received a complaint of criminal harassment but it was unfounded.

Members issued a 72-hour roadside suspension during a traffic stop.

There was a two-vehicle collision in Unity, Saskatchewan. There were no injuries. A charge of failing to yield the right of way was issued to one driver.

Members received a request to keep the peace while an individual retrieved property items from a residence.

The Unity RCMP were called to assist a parent calling to report their adult son was stuck in a ditch and was running out of gas and was at risk of freezing. The adult male did not want to call 9-1-1 so that members could locate him. Members spent several hours looking for the male before he was finally located, stuck in a rural area south and east of Landis, in the Kerrobert Detachment area. The male was transported for medical examination.

RCMP received a report of a possible gas leak. Members contacted SaskEnergy.

CN Police reported a railway malfunction at Senlac, Saskatchewan. Reported for information purposes.

RCMP received another report of a possible gas leak. Members contacted SaskEnergy.

Members attended the sudden death of an 83-year-old male from Unity, Sask. The death was not suspicious in nature.

Police received a report of a single vehicle rollover near Scott SK. Two individuals sustained minor injuries.  No charges were laid.

There was a complaint of an individual shining a light into residences. Members made patrols but could not locate the subject of complaint.

Members conducted a well-being check at the request of a family friend.

RCMP received a report of a suffering animal. Members euthanized a deer that was hit by a vehicle but was still alive at the side of the highway.

Police attended the sudden death of a 66-year-old male from the Unity area. The death was not suspicious in nature.

Members executed warrants for Humboldt, Wadena, and Yorkton RCMP Detachments as well as Saskatoon Police Services on an individual during a traffic stop.

RCMP received a report of a single vehicle rollover. A 47-year-old male from Denzil, Saskatchewan, was charged with public mischief after falsely reporting a vehicle had been stolen the previous week.

There were also six false 911 calls.

Atom Lazer Reds visit the Wilkie Outlaws

The Unity Red Lazers visited the Wilkie Outlaws in an atom division Hi-Way Hockey League game Jan. 14. Unity won the game 4-3.

UNITY SK RCMP REPORTS for December 19, 2017 to January 1, 2018

RCMP received a report of uttering threats. Members spoke with the subject of complaint. No charges were laid.

Police received a complaint of an individual receiving a text message about drug trafficking. There are no suspects at this time.

Members received a complaint of taking a motor vehicle without consent of owner but it was unfounded.

RCMP are investigating graffiti painted on road signs in the Town of Unity, Province of Saskatchewan.

Members attended a two-vehicle collision west of Unity on Highway 14. Both vehicle drivers and two passengers sustained minor injuries.  A traffic ticket was issued to one vehicle driver.

CN Police reported a railway crossing malfunction in Unity on two separate occasions in the past two weeks.

Police conducted a well-being check at the request of a neighbour.

A 49-year-old male from Warman, Saskatchewan was charged with failing to comply with a probation order when Members received a complaint of a domestic dispute.

There were several complaints of fraud. Members sent information to the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre.

RCMP received a complaint of an intoxicated male knocking on residence doors. Members located the subject of complaint, transported him to his residence and issued a verbal warning.

Members received a report of a single vehicle collision with a deer. There were no injuries.  Reported for insurance purposes.

Police are investigating a report of a stolen truck from a residence in Denzil, Sask. (This complaint was subsequently found to be false.)

There were also seven false 911 calls and one false alarm.

RCMP received a complaint of numerous buffalo on Saskatchewan Highway 14. Members contacted the owner who herded the animals back into a pasture.

Police received a complaint of an individual cutting a TV cable at a residence. There are no suspects at this time.

A 32-year-old female from Unity SK was charged with assault with a weapon after members received a complaint of assault.

RCMP received a report of theft but it was unfounded.

Police received a complaint of gunshots fired in a rural area near Winter, Saskatchewan. A 20-year-old male and a 20-year-old female, both from Unity, were charged with careless use of a firearm, unauthorized possession of a firearm and possession of a firearm in a motor vehicle.  The vehicle driver was also issued a 60-day roadside suspension.

Members received a complaint of a cow on Highway 31. The animal was herded off the road by the animal owner.

There was also one false 911 call, three traffic complaints, and one abandoned vehicle.

UNITY SK RCMP REPORTS for December 5 to 11, 2017

RCMP received a report of a single vehicle collision on Highway 21 north of Unity, Saskatchewan. There were no injuries and no charges were laid.

Members were called to a financial disagreement between a landlord and a tenant. The complaint was civil in nature.

Police conducted a well-being check at the request of a family member.

A 36-year-old male from Unity was charged with theft under $5,000 and two counts of failing to comply with an undertaking after RCMP received a complaint of theft.

RCMP are investigating a complaint of theft from a motor vehicle.

Members seized cannabis marihuana and drug paraphernalia during a traffic stop. The amount of drugs located in the vehicle was too small to proceed with charges.

Police received a report of a herd of buffalo on Highway 14 east of Unity. The animals had been herded back into the field before Member arrived.

A 32-year-old Unity male was charged with assault and possession of cannabis marijuana after police received a complaint of assault. As the male was on parole at the time, his parole was revoked, and he remains in custody.

Members received a complaint of individuals damaging a vehicle. This matter is still under investigation.

RCMP received a report of a hit-and-run causing damage to a vehicle. Reported for insurance purposes.

CN Police reported a railway crossing malfunction near Scott, Saskatchewan.

RCMP attended a single vehicle collision on Highway 14 west of Unity, Sask. Two individuals were transported to Unity hospital with injuries.  The collision was due to very icy road conditions.  No charges were laid.

Police are investigating a report of a stolen truck near Denzil SK

A 48-year-old Unity male was charged with possession of cannabis marijuana during a traffic stop. He was also issued a traffic ticket.

Members attended the sudden death of an 11-year-old male at a rural area near Denzil. The death is not suspicious in nature.

RCMP received a complaint of intoxicated individuals at Unity Community Centre. Members attended but all parties were gone on arrival.

Police received a complaint of individuals arguing in public. Members attended and spoke with the subjects of complaint.  No charges were laid.

Members received a Mental Health Act complaint. Members spoke with the complainant and offered assistance with a referral to receive support.

Police seized cannabis resin during a traffic stop. The amount of drugs located in the vehicle was too small to warrant charges- Subject warned.

RCMP received a complaint of missing property. This matter is still under investigation.

Members issued a 72-hour roadside suspension during a traffic stop.

Police conducted a well-being check on an individual at the request of an agency.

There was a report of an abandoned vehicle. The registered owner had moved the vehicle before members arrived.

An individual reported finding an ATM machine in the ditch on a rural road near Senlac, Saskatchewan. Members discovered it had been stolen from Provost, Alberta, and returned the property to the owner. There are no suspects at this time.

RCMP assisted an individual by making a referral to INTERPOL.

Members served a subpoena to an individual in our detachment area at the request of Saskatoon Crown Prosecution Office.

Police are investigating an incident of possession of property obtained by crime.

A 22-year-old male from Lloydminster was charged with public mischief while members were investigating a vehicle that fled from RCMP during a traffic stop.

Unity RCMP received several requests to assist with an individual with mental health issues.

Members received a request to complete a child welfare check.

CP Rail reported three railway crossing malfunctions occurring in Unity, Saskatchewan, simultaneously.

Police received a report of fraud. There are no suspects.

CN Police reported a railway crossing malfunction near Scott SK.

RCMP received a complaint of theft and are seeking assistance from the public in solving the theft that occurred at a work site in the RM of Senlac. Between November 13, and November 15, approximately $5,000 worth of cable was cut from the work site, and stolen. Members sent out a media release. There are no suspects.

There was a single vehicle collision near Senlac, Sask. There were no injuries.

Police provided traffic control while a semi was blocking Highway 21 south of Unity due to bad road conditions.

Members received a complaint of breach of peace. Complainant declined to lay charges.

RCMP received a report of a break-and-enter at Plains Marketing. There are no suspects at this time.

Police received a complaint of harassing social media messaging. Members warned the subject of complaint.
