Hockey, dance and curling – all in next week’s paper

The last issue of the Unity Wilkie Press-Herald for the month of January is already on its way. Making it even harder to believe that it’s nearing the end of January is the March-like weather out there!

In the paper next week, you will learn:

  • how the funds raised at the World Junior A Hockey Challenge game played in Unity SK December 12, 2014 will benefit our community;
  • the well-known group of Saskatchewan young people, Saskatchewan Express, is coming to perform in Unity – mark your calendars for Celebrate Unity 2015, March 2; and
  • Team Laycock’s visit to Unity was well attended and our youth curlers appreciated the tips and instruction they received from Saskatchewan’s top men’s curling team.

Of course, that’s not all – new appointments to the Unity Housing Authority, news from the CFIB about the stress for farmers caused by government red tape, the RCMP report and more also fill the pages.

First issue of 2015 ready for readers Monday

After a holiday break, the first 2015 issue of the Unity Wilkie Press-Herald will be ready for readers January 5. Although small in size, it is packed full of information and photos, including:

  • a detailed story on the UCHS Journalism 20 class and their coverage of the Russia vs. Canada East game Dec. 12, 2014;
  • pre-Christmas standings and stats in the SWHL for the Miners, Mallards and Outlaws;
  • reminders to snowmobilers and landowners about legalities;
  • an introduction to Team Laycock, who represented Saskatchewan in the last Brier, and who is coming to Unity January 14.

Unity hosts international junior hockey game!

With nearby Kindersley, Saskatchewan hosting the 2014 World Junior A Challenge hockey series, Unity was chosen to host the pre-tournament game between Canada East and Russia. The game was played in front of about 700 local and visiting hockey fans the evening of December 12.

Unity Composite High School’s Journalism class also live streamed the game, complete with pre- and post-game interviews and “Coaches’ Corner” segments between periods.

Russia dominated play early in the first period, scoring the first goal only a minute and 35 seconds after the opening faceoff.

Although Canada bounced back to have numerous scoring chances, outshooting the Russians 33 to 23, Russia’s goalie kept them in the game for the ultimate 5-2 win. Goalie Anton Krasotkin was one of the more sought-after players after the game when it was time to sign autographs.

October 5 to 11 is National Fire Prevention Week and so the October 6th issue of the Unity Wilkie Press-Herald will be the annual Fire Prevention Week issue. Look for photographs of all our firefighters, along with fire prevention tips and information about the Unity and Wilkie fire departments.

Of course, we have other news too! Look for:

  • information on the new virus circulating in Saskatchewan;
  • just before provincials, a wrap-up of the schools’ cross-country seasons;
  • an update on Unity golfer Justin Wood; and
  • details on a special speaker coming to UCHS – the public is invited.

No lack of things to see and do in and around Unity either – the unitystories calendar has been updated and you can check out the advertisements in next week’s paper if you need further details.

 

Cardinals win to play another day

After winning their quarter-final three-game series against the Midwest Expos, the Cardinals advanced to the North Saskatchewan River Baseball League semifinals.

Their first game against the Border City Blue Jays was in Lloydminster July 30, where they lost 5-0, putting them into a must-win position for the second game, played in Unity, Saskatchewan, August 5.

Cory Wildeman started on the pitcher’s mound for the Cardinals, holding the Jays to only one run – in the third – for the first five innings.

On the other side of the ledger, Blake Robertson scored on an RBI by Trace Sperle in the first and Graeme Gieni made it around the bases after being walked in the second.

The score remained 2-1 for the Cardinals until the sixth inning. After the Blue Jays were placing runners on base and there was only one out in the top of the sixth, the Cardinals made a pitching change and Rhett Feser came in to close out the game.

 Despite two strikeouts, with defensive errors being made by the Cardinals, the Blue Jays managed to score three runs, putting the home team behind 4-2. A hit by Ryan Greenwald brought Rhett Feser home in the bottom of the sixth to make it 4-3 but the Cardinals started the seventh inning in a deficit position.

Feser was able to strike out Scott Willis for the third out in the top of the seventh without the Jays scoring, despite having runners on second and third.

The score remained 4-3 as the Cards went up for their last bat. Scott Greenwald went out on a fly to first.

With two out, rookies Blake Robertson and Trace Sperle were up next and both got on base. Blake scored to tie the game and Mark Ralston was up next.

Mark Ralston hit and was safe at first base while a Blue Jays error let Trace run home to make it 5-4 and a win for the Cardinals.

The third and final game in the series goes tonight, August 6, in Lloydminster, with the winner moving on to the NSRBL final against the Lloydminster Twins.

Baseball Hall of Fame invitation

Our great province of Saskatchewan has a very rich baseball history, and in honour of those that contributed to this history, the Saskatchewan Baseball Hall of Fame and Museum will be celebrating the 30th Annual Induction Saturday, August 16, Along with the regular induction day events, extra festivities include a pancake, sausage and coffee breakfast from 8 to 10 am at the Legion Hall, 262-22 Street, sponsored by Battleford Historical Lions Club.

At 10 am, the official unveiling of the “Biggest Bat in Canada”, will take place on the grounds of the museum, 292-22 Street, Battleford, SK.

The Town of Battleford has proclaimed Saturday, August 16th, Saskatchewan Baseball Museum Day!

As promised in the paper this week, next week’s Unity Wilkie Press-Herald will have the details of the charges regarding the horses near Scott who were suffering from lack of food this past winter. Along with that, you can expect a variety of information and photos, such as:

  • an update on Unity golfer Justin Wood;
  • a summary on this year’s season for the Unity and Wilkie Minor Ball baseball teams, and who’s heading off to provincial play;
  • a report on special recognition of the Oil Persons by Unity Golf Club; and
  • information on car seat clinics and the new laws regarding booster seats.

Provincial midget hockey weekend

Both the Unity Midget AA and the Midget A Lazers played provincial final games in Unity, SK, Saturday, March 29. Although neither team emerged as provincial champions, these hard-working teams of young men deserve credit for their excellent seasons, including coming oh-so-close to claiming their respective provincial banners.

See the April 7 issue of the Unity Wilkie Press-Herald for a wrap-up article on the minor hockey season and additional photos. In the meantime, are some action shots from both games.

Frozen ground delays Unity pool construction

Although progress is being made at the site of Unity’s new swimming pool, weather has also caused some delays. According to Unity’s director of culture, parks and recreation, Nicole Goldsworthy, it is unlikely the Unity Credit Union Aquatic Centre will be ready for June 1 as originally hoped.

In order to provide swimming lessons and recreational swimming as usual for community and area residents, the old pool will be used.

Goldsworthy said, “After a meeting on February 24, 2014 with Town Council and Paradise LeisureScapes, it was determined that the installation of the walls could not proceed until the frost is out of the ground and that will likely be in May. There is still six weeks of work left to install the walls and another two weeks to pour the swimming pool deck. At the earliest, the Town of Unity may be able to open the new pool mid-July if everything stays on schedule.”

The maintenance and equipment building is almost complete, while construction on the new change house will start “as soon as possible and will be completed over the summer.”

Although the work is a little behind schedule, enough has been done to date that ensures the Town of Unity will still receive the $250,000 through the Community Infrastructure Improvement Fund (CIIF).
