UNITY SK RCMP REPORTS for  January 2 to 8, 2018

RCMP received a report of a possible gas leak. Members contacted SaskEnergy.

CN Police reported a railway malfunction at Senlac, Saskatchewan. Reported for information purposes.

RCMP received another report of a possible gas leak. Members contacted SaskEnergy.

Members attended the sudden death of an 83-year-old male from Unity, Sask. The death was not suspicious in nature.

Police received a report of a single vehicle rollover near Scott SK. Two individuals sustained minor injuries.  No charges were laid.

There was a complaint of an individual shining a light into residences. Members made patrols but could not locate the subject of complaint.

Members conducted a well-being check at the request of a family friend.

RCMP received a report of a suffering animal. Members euthanized a deer that was hit by a vehicle but was still alive at the side of the highway.

Police attended the sudden death of a 66-year-old male from the Unity area. The death was not suspicious in nature.

Members executed warrants for Humboldt, Wadena, and Yorkton RCMP Detachments as well as Saskatoon Police Services on an individual during a traffic stop.

RCMP received a report of a single vehicle rollover. A 47-year-old male from Denzil, Saskatchewan, was charged with public mischief after falsely reporting a vehicle had been stolen the previous week.

There were also six false 911 calls.

UNITY SK RCMP REPORTS for November 28 to December 4, 2017

CN Police reported a railway crossing malfunction near Scott, Saskatchewan.

RCMP attended a single vehicle collision on Highway 14 west of Unity, Sask. Two individuals were transported to Unity hospital with injuries.  The collision was due to very icy road conditions.  No charges were laid.

Police are investigating a report of a stolen truck near Denzil SK

A 48-year-old Unity male was charged with possession of cannabis marijuana during a traffic stop. He was also issued a traffic ticket.

Members attended the sudden death of an 11-year-old male at a rural area near Denzil. The death is not suspicious in nature.

RCMP received a complaint of intoxicated individuals at Unity Community Centre. Members attended but all parties were gone on arrival.

Police received a complaint of individuals arguing in public. Members attended and spoke with the subjects of complaint.  No charges were laid.

Members received a Mental Health Act complaint. Members spoke with the complainant and offered assistance with a referral to receive support.

Police seized cannabis resin during a traffic stop. The amount of drugs located in the vehicle was too small to warrant charges- Subject warned.

UNITY SK RCMP REPORTS for November 14 to 20, 2017

Unity RCMP received several requests to assist with an individual with mental health issues.

Members received a request to complete a child welfare check.

CP Rail reported three railway crossing malfunctions occurring in Unity, Saskatchewan, simultaneously.

Police received a report of fraud. There are no suspects.

CN Police reported a railway crossing malfunction near Scott SK.

RCMP received a complaint of theft and are seeking assistance from the public in solving the theft that occurred at a work site in the RM of Senlac. Between November 13, and November 15, approximately $5,000 worth of cable was cut from the work site, and stolen. Members sent out a media release. There are no suspects.

There was a single vehicle collision near Senlac, Sask. There were no injuries.

Police provided traffic control while a semi was blocking Highway 21 south of Unity due to bad road conditions.

Members received a complaint of breach of peace. Complainant declined to lay charges.

RCMP received a report of a break-and-enter at Plains Marketing. There are no suspects at this time.

Police received a complaint of harassing social media messaging. Members warned the subject of complaint.

There were also six false alarms, eight traffic complaints and one false 911 call.

UNITY SK RCMP REPORTS for July 25 to 31, 2017

RCMP received a complaint of theft. Member issued a verbal warning to the subject of complaint. Complainant declined to lay charges.

A 61-year-old Unity male was charged with mischief and failing to comply with a probation order after police received a complaint of an individual harassing employees at a local business.

Police received a report of an abandoned vehicle. Members located the registered owner who moved the vehicle.

RCMP received a complaint of a hit-and-run causing damage to a vehicle. Reported for insurance purposes.

Members attended a minor traffic collision to act as mediators between the two vehicle drivers.

Police conducted a well-being check on an individual at the request of a family friend.

RCMP received a report of a semi-truck on fire near Scott, Sask. The fire was not suspicious in nature.

There was a complaint of theft of fuel from a local gas station. This matter is still under investigation.

Members received a report of a damaged street light. Reported for insurance purposes.

Police received a report of a suspicious vehicle. Members patrolled but could not locate the vehicle.

RCMP received another complaint of a hit-and-run causing damage to a vehicle. Reported for insurance purposes.

Members are investigating a complaint of an injured farm animal.

There were also two traffic complaints, two false alarms and one false 911 call.

A truck stolen from Unity July 24 was recovered by Blackfalds Alberta RCMP July 27. Matthew MacDonald, 31 years old, of Bashaw Alta., was charged with possession of stolen property and held in custody on this and other matters.

UNITY SK RCMP REPORTS for September 13 to 19, 2016

RCMP received a report of damage to a railway crossing gate. Reported for insurance purposes.

Members are investigating a complaint of an individual damaging a vehicle.

Police received a complaint of damage to the windows and doors of the Armada Inn In Unity, Saskatchewan. This matter is still under investigation.

A 24-year-old Unity male was charged with possession of property obtained by crime when police received a report of a stolen bike located in a residence yard.

There was a report of suspicious people loitering in a back alley. Subjects of complaint were gone on arrival.

A 27-year-old Unity male was charged with failing to comply with a probation order, two counts of failing to comply with condition of undertaking and with disturbing the peace when police noted he was out of his residence during curfew and was causing a disturbance.

RCMP received a complaint of a vehicle driving through a gate in Scott, Sask. Members discovered the vehicle had been reported stolen from Wilkie three days earlier.  This matter is still under investigation.

Police received several complaints of an individual going through the contents of a vehicle. These matters are still under investigation.  The RCMP urges residents to lock vehicles and remove the keys and all valuables from inside the vehicle.

Members received a complaint of theft from a motor vehicle. This matter is still under investigation.

There was a report of theft in Denzil SK but it was unfounded.

Members assisted Calgary Police Services with an investigation.

A debit card was found at the Unity Golf Course. It was returned to the local bank to locate the owner.

Police received a complaint of theft from a motor vehicle. This matter is still under investigation.

RCMP completed a wellbeing check on an individual at the request of family members.

Police received a report of a combine on fire near Unity. No police action required.

Members received a complaint of a loud party at a residence. Members attended and spoke with the subject of complaint.  There were no further issues.

RCMP attended the sudden death of a 42-year-old Unity male. The death was not suspicious in nature.

A 27-year-old Unity male was charged with four counts of failing to comply with an undertaking, mischief, and resisting a peace officer when police located him standing in the roadway and obstructing motorists.

There was also one false 911 call, one traffic complaint and one false alarm.

Police looking for stolen quad and trailer

On March 8, 2015, shortly after 8:00 p.m., the Unity RCMP were called to a theft that had just occurred in a rural area near Scott, Saskatchewan. A trailer along with a quad were reported stolen.

The quad is described as a 2011 Arctic Cat Mud Pro 1000 with green fenders in the front and black fenders in the back.  The quad had 30-inch Gorilla Silverback tires on it as well as a 64-inch yellow snow blade with a broken hook. A light bar was mounted on the front rack.

The trailer is described as a black 2001 Trailtech two-place snowmobile trailer. The trailer had a Saskatchewan license plate marker of 171 HMP. The trailer had a spare tire mounted on the front as well as broken plywood in the front right hand corner. The rims were white and rusty and there was a slide-in ramp underneath.

New gas and power usage records set in Saskatchewan

With temperatures dropping, both SaskPower and SaskEnergy/TransGas set new records for power use and natural gas consumption January 4 and 5. According to Environment Canada, records at their weather station at Scott, Saskatchewan, showed the temperature dropping to -35C the night of January 4.

SaskPower says the new peak power load record of 3,583 megawatts was reached at 6:20 pm January 4.

According to a press release issued by SaskPower, they acquired approximately 7,800 new residential, commercial and industrial customers over the course of the 2014 year. Acting president and CEO Mike Marsh said, “We continue to set new records for power consumption, the result of more people living and working in our province than ever before.”

Meanwhile, TransGas delivered 1.27 PetaJoules of natural gas in 24 hours from Sunday, January 4, to Monday, January 5. According to a SaskEnergy press release, this was a two per cent increase over the previous record of 1.24 PetaJoules, set Dec. 6, 2014.

The release explained, “A PetaJoule is a unit of measurement equivalent to one million GigaJoules of natural gas — the average home in Saskatchewan consumes about 105 GigaJoules of natural gas annually.”

Like SaskPower, SaskEnergy has also been adding new customers. Since the previous record was set, about 7,300 new customers have been added to the TransGas distribution network.

SaskPower provided the following tips both to lighten the demand and to lessen your power bills.

Turn down the thermostat. For every degree you lower your thermostat overnight for an eight-hour period, you can save up to two per cent on your heating costs.

Plug in your car with a timer. Your car only needs to be plugged in for four hours. Using a block heater timer will save you around $25 a year.

Turn out the lights. Shorter days and longer nights mean interior lights in your home are on longer. Remember to turn them out when you leave a room. Better yet, use LED light bulbs and cut down the power used by about three-quarters.

Yup … already we’re looking at November’s last Unity Wilkie Press-Herald and yes, there are Christmas ads in it! Christmas ads and some interesting news stories, such as:

  • details on the final court appearance by the Blairs regarding the horses that starved to death near Scott, SK last winter;
  • the announcement that Unity will be hosting a World Junior A hockey game in December – Russia vs. Canada East;
  • a new type of energy-efficient construction taking place in Luseland; and
  • some details on a visit to Unity earlier this year by Charles Bauman, who bicycled from Ontario to Alaska and back, raising funds and awareness for the plight of children in Third World countries.

We are late with our preview but the paper is not quite out on the street yet so here we go! In the Unity Wilkie Press-Herald of July 21, 2014, you will find:
