A press release received January 8, 2015, indicates SaskPower has become aware of telephone and email scams currently circulating. The power corporation reminds customers contacted by a scammer to report suspicious activity to their local police department if contacted by a scammer.
According to the release, a SaskPower customer was recently phoned by someone posing as a SaskPower employee who told the customer that unless she purchased and supplied the serial number from a prepaid power card — not even currently sold in Saskatchewan — or a prepaid VISA card, her power would be disconnected within an hour. The call was made from a 1-800 phone number. The customer did not provide any such payment and so in this case the scammer was not successful.
SaskPower never asks customers to purchase prepaid cards of any kind. Even if your SaskPower account is in arrears, the company will work with you on repayment arrangements so you can avoid having your power disconnected.
If you doubt the authenticity of a call, whether from SaskPower or anyone else, hang up immediately. You can always check the status of your account by calling SaskPower at 1-888-757-6937.
SaskPower also reminds customers to protect themselves from email scams requesting them to download or send personal information. One such email scam currently circulating claims to be from “SaskPower Billing” with a zip file for customers to download.
SaskPower does not email customers asking them to download their statement, or to provide account information. Any customers who have subscribed to MyPower Account are directed to their secure MyPowerAccount login to view their bill when it is ready.
Anyone who has been the target of scammers is encouraged to report the incident to their local RCMP and the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre at 1-888-495-8501.
