Unity hosts international junior hockey game!

With nearby Kindersley, Saskatchewan hosting the 2014 World Junior A Challenge hockey series, Unity was chosen to host the pre-tournament game between Canada East and Russia. The game was played in front of about 700 local and visiting hockey fans the evening of December 12.

Unity Composite High School’s Journalism class also live streamed the game, complete with pre- and post-game interviews and “Coaches’ Corner” segments between periods.

Russia dominated play early in the first period, scoring the first goal only a minute and 35 seconds after the opening faceoff.

Although Canada bounced back to have numerous scoring chances, outshooting the Russians 33 to 23, Russia’s goalie kept them in the game for the ultimate 5-2 win. Goalie Anton Krasotkin was one of the more sought-after players after the game when it was time to sign autographs.

Enjoy these photos from the game and other events of the evening. Please see the December 22nd issue of the Unity-Wilkie Press-Herald for additional photos and coverage of the events.

Funding available for community rinks

The Government of Saskatchewan has announced that the Community Rink Affordability Grant will be offered in 2014.  This is the third consecutive year for the popular program.

The Community Rink Affordability Grant provides funding to Saskatchewan’s municipal indoor skating and curling rinks.  Communities, schools, non-profits and First Nations are eligible to apply to the program.  Successful applicants will receive a grant of $2,500 per indoor ice surface.  The grant may be used to help offset the cost of rink operations and minor capital upgrades.

“Skating and curling facilities have always played an important role within Saskatchewan communities,” Parks, Culture and Sport Minister Mark Docherty said.  “They serve as meeting places where we can socialize, meet new people and engage in physical activity.  By supporting the operation and maintenance of our local rinks, this grant will contribute to the enviable quality of life enjoyed by citizens across the province.”

The Government of Saskatchewan is committing $1.7 million to the grant program for 2014.  More than $3.2 million has been invested into the program in the last two years.  The program has benefited more than 380 communities across the province.

The Saskatchewan Parks and Recreation Association will administer and deliver the program.

“Ice rinks bring communities together by providing individuals of all ages with the opportunity to participate in fun recreation activities,” Saskatchewan Parks and Recreation Association President Mike Powell said.  “Our organization is pleased to once again partner with the Ministry of Parks, Culture and Sport in the administration of the Community Rink Affordability Grant.  This grant ensures that rinks continue to be well-maintained and well-operated so that Saskatchewan communities can enjoy cold weather activities in safe and quality environments.”

Provincial midget hockey weekend

Both the Unity Midget AA and the Midget A Lazers played provincial final games in Unity, SK, Saturday, March 29. Although neither team emerged as provincial champions, these hard-working teams of young men deserve credit for their excellent seasons, including coming oh-so-close to claiming their respective provincial banners.

See the April 7 issue of the Unity Wilkie Press-Herald for a wrap-up article on the minor hockey season and additional photos. In the meantime, are some action shots from both games.

Miners Update

Unity Miners

Unity Miners senior men’s hockey team celebrate a goal in a game December 18 against the Luseland/Dodsland Mallards.

Although the Unity Miners lost three of the four games they played in December and are only in fourth place in the standings of the six teams of the Sask West Hockey League, they have three players in the top 10 on the scoring leader board.

Mitch Nuemeier of the Luseland/Dodsland Mallards has 37 points and is the top scorer so far this season. In second and third place are Unity Miners Behn Robertson and Adam Shirley with 34 and 30 points respectively. Also in the top 10 is Michael Shirley, sitting in eighth place at 22 points.

Recap of December results

The Miners beat the Eatonia Huskies 4-1 December 6 in Unity. The next night they lost to Kerrobert 11-5. After a week and a half off, the Miners hosted the Luseland/Dodsland Mallards December 18, also losing that game 11-5. They travelled to Eatonia two nights later where they went down 7-3.

Unity Miners Dec. 18, 2013In most games, the Unity senior men’s hockey team outshoots their opposition – 38-34 in the December 20 Eatonia game, 34-29 in the December 18 Luseland/Dodsland game and 43-37 in the December 7 Kerrobert game. The goaltending for the Miners will have to improve if they are to move up in the standings in the New Year.

Gilbert Agencies

Gilbert Agencies sponsored a $10,000 Shoot to Win at the Miners’ December 18th home game. Shooters Scott Henning, Brayden Klein and Leah Anne Srigley were unable to hit the board, let alone the small hole in the centre. They had to take their shots from 114 feet, which was well past centre ice, beyond the opposing blue line.

Upcoming games

The Miners travel to Kindersley to take on last year’s champions and this year’s league leaders, the Red Lions, January 3. The next night, they will host the Kerrobert Tigers, who are currently at the bottom of the standings. Game time for the January 4 game in the Unity Community Centre is 8:30 p.m.
