The Humboldt Broncos bus accident – what can you do?

Humboldt Strong

While contributions to the Humboldt Broncos GoFundMe fund are still welcome – and many dollars will eventually be needed for rehab, counselling and even home renovations for accessibility – some people may be wondering about other ways to honour the fallen and injured.

The Saskatchewan Health Authority posted on Facebook April 7: “We would like to thank those individuals who have approached hospital staff in Saskatoon to offer their help – and even food – to those affected by the tragic accident involving the Humboldt Broncos yesterday. Your generosity is a very Saskatchewan response and it is amazing. However, we are asking that you offer that assistance to others in need in our community instead – suggestions include but are not limited to … (food banks, supported living agencies, etc.) If you are not in Saskatoon, but wish to help in some way, we encourage you to reach out to similar support agencies in your own community. #SaskatchewanStrong.”

If, God forbid, a major trauma event happened in one of our own communities, it is our local agencies and emergency response teams who will be tasked with the initial response.

STARS is another organization that would make good, and appropriate, use of donations made in honour of the Humboldt Broncos.

Blood was reportedly in short supply when the injured players first arrived in the Saskatoon hospitals. Kindersley Composite School and Kindersley Co-op are hosting a blood donor clinic at the Kindersley Elks Hall Monday, April 16, from 2 to 7 p.m.

With the entire province touched by the tragedy, the more people who know about how to maintain their own mental health and how to appropriately interact with others in a safe, caring manner, the better. There will be a mental health workshop in Unity April 30 – watch for more details and consider attending.

The Broncos organization itself each year runs a cash lottery as its primary fundraiser. Ticket sales for that lottery close April 27 and the grand prize is $100,000. An add-on 50/50 is also available. With many other things to do this month, in light of the tragic bus accident, we can help ensure this lottery still sells out so the Broncos have the funding they need to ice a team next season. Call 1-833-210-2018.

These are but a few suggestions for those who are wanting to help in some way and aren’t sure what to do.
