UNITY SK RCMP REPORTS for October 18 to 24, 2016

A lost cellphone was turned in to RCMP.

RCMP received a report of a missing person. The complainant called back to inform police that the individual had been located.

Members attended a two-vehicle collision in a parking lot in Unity, Sask. There were no injuries.

Police received a report of an abandoned vehicle. Member contacted the registered owner of the vehicle who agreed to move it.

RCMP received a report of a two-vehicle collision in Unity. There were no injuries.

There was a vehicle collision with a moose on Highway 21 north of Unity. There were no injuries.

Members received a report of a collision between two vehicles in Unity. There were no injuries.

Police received several reports of gun shots north of Unity. Members discovered the sounds were being emitted from noise cannons used to scare birds away from crops in the fields.

RCMP completed a well-being check at the request of family members.

Cross-poppiesYou don’t want to miss our annual tribute to veterans in the November 4th issue of the Unity Wilkie Press-Herald.  Reporter Louise Robson was able to interview Si Campbell and Helena Long talked to Paul Marshall who built a number of metal poppies for installation at an international memorial in Ypres, Belgium. We haven’t forgotten all the other important news such as:

  • a report on Luseland students’ exchange with classes from New Brunswick;

Also a note if you are a Unity subscriber and receive your paper in your post office box. Due to changes in how we can deliver the paper to Canada Post, papers will now only be delivered at 1 Friday afternoons. UNITY SK RCMP REPORTS for October 11 to 17, 2016

CN Police reported two railway crossing malfunctions near Scott SK this week. No police action required for either occurrence.

RCMP received a report of a vehicle collision with a deer. Reported for insurance purposes.

Police received a report of an abandoned vehicle on Highway 21. Members contacted the registered owner who agreed to have it towed.

A cellphone was turned in to Unity RCMP.

Members received a Mental Health Act complaint. The subject of complaint was located and transported to Unity Health Centre for assessment.

There was a bale on fire in the ditch on Highway 21. Unity Fire Department attended to extinguish the flames.

A 38-year-old male from Tramping Lake, Saskatchewan, was arrested and charged with mischief after police received a complaint of a broken vehicle window.

RCMP received a complaint of slashed vehicle tires. This matter is still under investigation.

Police received a complaint of theft. This matter is still under investigation.

A 27-year-old Unity male was charged with eight counts of failing to comply with undertaking, three counts of failing to comply with condition of undertaking and resisting peace officer after police located him away from his residence after curfew.

Members received a request to serve a subpoena to an individual in the area but the individual no longer resides near Unity.

RCMP received a complaint of a suspicious vehicle. Members patrolled but the vehicle was gone on arrival.

Police received a complaint of an individual throwing property around a residence. Members attended and warned the subject of complaint. No further issues were reported.

Members received a report of a knife that was located in a garbage can at Unity Health Centre. Members attended and disposed of the knife.

There was also one false alarm and one false 911 call.

UNITY SK REPORTS for October 4 to 10, 2016

RCMP attended a collision between a semi and a tractor on Highway 31 near Denzil, Sask. There were no injuries. The semi driver was issued a traffic ticket.

Police received a report of a one car train derailment near Senlac, SK. Reported for information purposes.

A land owner requested information about the Trespass Act.

There was a complaint of an intoxicated male lying near the Unity Fire Hall. The individual was transported to Unity hospital by emergency medical services.

RCMP received a report of a cabin fire at Suffern Lake. There were no injuries and the fire was not suspicious in nature.

There were also two false alarms and one traffic complaint.

New mayor and council

Congratulations to mayor-elect Ben Weber, returning councillors Brian Vanderlinde and Brent Weber and new council members Bob Abel, Doreen Bonogofski, Rick Hill and Curtis McLean.

Thank you to outgoing Mayor Sylvia Maljan for your years of service and for making the year’s election a mayoral race.

UNITY SK RCMP REPORTS for September 27 to October 3, 2016

RCMP received a report of an abandoned vehicle. Members located the registered owner.

Members acted as mediators between two business owners.

Unity Detachment served subpoenas to individuals in the area at the request of Alberta Prosecutions Branch.

CN Police reported a railway crossing malfunction.

Police received a complaint of fail to comply with conditions of recognizance. This matter is still under investigation.

RCMP received a report of machinery parked in a rural area that had been moved and damaged. There are no suspects at this time.

There was a complaint of careless use of firearm. Members located the subjects of complaint and issued a verbal warning regarding firearm use in rural areas and advised them to use a local gun range.

Police received a complaint of fail to comply with an undertaking in Denzil, Saskatchewan. Members located the subject of complaint who required medical assistance.  EMS transported the individual to Saskatoon for assessment.  This matter is still under investigation.

Members received a call of cattle in the ditch south of Unity, Sask. Cows had been returned to the pasture by the time members attended.

There were also three false 911 calls, one traffic complaint and one false alarm.

Elections in Unity October 26

Town of Unity voters will go to the polls October 26 to elect a mayor, six councillors and a representative for the Light of Christ Catholic School Division.

Incumbent mayor and long-time Unity resident Sylvia Maljan is seeking her third term of office as mayor. Maljan is being challenged by Ben Weber who has been on Unity town council as a councillor and formerly served on Yorkton town council both as mayor and councillor.

Ten people are vying for six councillor seats. Incumbents Terry Flaherty, meat manager at Delta Co-op; Brian Vanderlinde, maintenance person; and Brent Weber, who works in oil and gas, are being challenged by Robert Abel, marketing advisor; Doreen Bonogofski, clearing clerk; Richard Hill, retired; Curtis McLean, equipment operator; Shaun O’Brian, operations manager; Pat Varga, retired; and Dean Wildeman, business owner.

Both mayoral candidates and all council candidates will be in attendance this evening, Wednesday, October 12, at an all-candidates forum sponsored by the Unity and District Chamber of Commerce. Each candidate will be introducing his or herself to the audience and there will be time for a meet-and-greet afterwards. Plan to attend! The forum is in the upper hall at the Unity Community Centre and begins at 7:30 pm.

Catholic ratepayers will also be electing a representative to sit on the LOCCSD board on behalf of St. Peter’s School. In the running for this position are incumbent Gerald Beres, retired, and educational assistant Sandra Morin.
