Decoration and Dedication Day at Veterans’ Plot

Veterans' Plot at Pleasantview Cemetery, Unity SK decoration day unveiling2

The Royal Canadian Legion, Unity Branch No. 90, hosted a special Dedication and Decoration service at the veterans’ plot at Pleasantview Cemetery in Unity, Sept. 7. Padre George Ward led the special service, which included the national anthem, prayer, the laying of wreaths, remembrance and The Last Post. About 50 people attended the service, held to unveil a new sign (see photos above) and dedicate other improvements to the plot, including a new stone memorial at the base of the cross.

The new sign reads “Veterans’ Plot, Royal Canadian Legion, Branch #90, Unity, Saskatchewan, July, 2014” on one side and lists the four wars of the 20th century on the other.

Veterans' Plot, Pleasantview Cemetery, Unity, SaskatchewanLegion member and Chair of Plot and Centotaph Mike Wildeman said that, although people tend to think of the two World Wars when they think of veterans, there are three Boer War veterans buried in the plot and there are two local Korean War veterans who wish to be buried there when their time comes.

The new large polished granite memorial at the foot of the cross, in the approximate centre of the soldiers’ plot, bears 199 names – the name of every soldier who went to war from Unity and the surrounding areas.

Cross in Veterans' Plot, Unity SKWreaths were laid at the memorial and cross by Cst. Terry Forbes on behalf of the Government of Canada, former MLA John Britton representing the Government of Saskatchewan, Mayor Sylvia Maljan on behalf of the Town of Unity,

and Cpt. Lorne Kohlman on behalf of Royal Canadian Air Cadet Squadron Macklin No. 601.

Other improvements made to the cemetery include refinishing of the vinyl on the cross, refurbishing of the unknown soldier statue, cement borders outlining the walkways at the foot of the graves and a new flagpole and benches. With respect to the benches, it was said Legion members hope people visiting the cemetery will take time to sit and think about the sacrifices made by veterans.

Over $20,000 was spent on the site, the majority raised by the Unity Legion branch. The balance of the funds came from a federal grant and contributions from the Town of Unity and the RMs of Round Valley, Grass Lake and Tramping Lake.

Along with the Canadian flag flying at the top of the flagpole, and the one covering the new sign, which was respectfully removed at the appropriate time during the ceremony, 56 other flags fluttered in the wind, lined up along rows of gravesites. Wildeman said there were a flag for each local First World War veteran – 36 – and Second World War veteran – 20 – who died overseas. He noted that if you count the names on the cenotaph at the Legion/Lions Memorial Park in Unity, you will find 56 names.

Deaths shock community

News that well-known public health nurse, Shirley Parkinson, and her husband Donald, were found deceased on their farm outside of Unity, SK started circulating around the community yesterday morning (September 11). A press release from the Saskatchewan media office of the RCMP, issued at 3 pm, confirmed the deaths and disclosed that police had found the bodies the evening before, Wednesday. Police were looking for Shirley after co-workers at the Unity Health Centre reported her missing.

(The RCMP press release follows, below.)

Many, many people in Unity and the surrounding area came to know Shirley as they took their babies to be immunized. She watched those babies grow up as she came to the schools for Grade 6 vaccinations and conducted health clinics at the high school.

For Shirley, public service didn’t stop at her job. She spent many years as a volunteer with the Air Cadets and – although her own children had long since graduated from the program – continued to be a mentor to  young girls as a Sparks and Brownie leader. Residents will no doubt learn of other contributions she made as the weeks unfold.

Donald was devoted to his daughters and was often seen at events they were involved in. He too was a parent volunteer with the Air Cadets. He and Shirley took the girls to many concerts in bigger centres. He was self-employed, running a tractor parts business known as British Tractors.

The prayers and thoughts of the community are with Sarah and Zoe as they struggle to come to grips with this unforeseen tragedy. Many, many people are sending them love and hugs, although truthfully almost none of us can truly understand the pain and despair they must be going through. We can only hope the knowledge that at least some of their pain is shared by many others and that an enfolding circle of love and support is surrounding them will help a little.

RCMP press release, September 11, 2014

Members located the missing 56-year-old female, identified as Shirley Parkinson of the Unity area, deceased in an outbuilding on the property. Further investigation revealed a deceased 60-year-old male, identified as Donald Parkinson of the Unity area, outside on the property. The deceased female and male were married at the time of the incident, were not known to police and were located on their private property.

Investigators are not seeking any suspects and there is no risk to public safety. Autopsies have been ordered and the investigation continues with the assistance of Office of the Chief Coroner.

Watch for scam job postings

When someone, who is not a regular advertiser and does not represent a known business in one of our local or area communities, calls the Unity-Wilkie Press-Herald to place an advertisement, one way to check the authenticity and genuineness of the caller is to ask for credit card information. Then the cost of the ad is charged upfront, before the ad runs in the paper.

Another standard safeguard is to ensure we have complete contact information, including a snail mail address and a telephone number.

In late August, a “John ***”  wanted to run an ad In the Press-Herald for a customer service rep, offering a monthly salary of $3,290. Applicants were to contact him by email.

“John” was ready to provide credit card information as soon as we could come up with the price. A local street address in Unity, SK and a 306-228- phone number were given.

A few details, such as someone in the background telling the man on the phone what to say, made the Press-Herald staff suspicious. A reverse lookup of the telephone number found that it belonged to a resident we know. When we called him, he knew nothing about the ad or the John who had called our office.

More than likely, had the ad run, anyone applying for the advertised position would have been asked for their bank account information – supposedly for deposit of paycheques but really so the scammers could drain whatever funds the person already had in there. As well, ithey may have planned to use the names, addresses and SIN numbers of applicants in an identity theft scheme.

The incident was reported to the police, and we have since learned of attempts by the culprits to run the same or similar ads in other Saskatchewan newspapers.

Remember to never, ever give out bank account or other financial information to someone you do not know and have not thoroughly researched!

Note: We are not using “John’s” last name online as the name may belong to some innocent man somewhere whose identity and credit card information were stolen.
