Cardinals win to play another day

After winning their quarter-final three-game series against the Midwest Expos, the Cardinals advanced to the North Saskatchewan River Baseball League semifinals.

Their first game against the Border City Blue Jays was in Lloydminster July 30, where they lost 5-0, putting them into a must-win position for the second game, played in Unity, Saskatchewan, August 5.

Cory Wildeman started on the pitcher’s mound for the Cardinals, holding the Jays to only one run – in the third – for the first five innings.

On the other side of the ledger, Blake Robertson scored on an RBI by Trace Sperle in the first and Graeme Gieni made it around the bases after being walked in the second.

The score remained 2-1 for the Cardinals until the sixth inning. After the Blue Jays were placing runners on base and there was only one out in the top of the sixth, the Cardinals made a pitching change and Rhett Feser came in to close out the game.

 Despite two strikeouts, with defensive errors being made by the Cardinals, the Blue Jays managed to score three runs, putting the home team behind 4-2. A hit by Ryan Greenwald brought Rhett Feser home in the bottom of the sixth to make it 4-3 but the Cardinals started the seventh inning in a deficit position.

Feser was able to strike out Scott Willis for the third out in the top of the seventh without the Jays scoring, despite having runners on second and third.

The score remained 4-3 as the Cards went up for their last bat. Scott Greenwald went out on a fly to first.

Last paper before summer holiday break

Monday’s newspaper, the August 4th Unity Wilkie Press-Herald (which won’t hit the streets until Tuesday, August 5, because of the long weekend holiday) has plenty of information for readers:

  • the story of Unity’s Justin Wood coming in second, and even leading at one point, in the Saskatchewan Men’s Amateur Golf Championship;
  • details of funding for repairs to the Agroplex; and
  • a history and a preview of this year’s Swing for the Cure at Atton’s Lake.

Not to mention the latest RCMP report, Faith Matters, job ads and NSRBL updates, along with a special article on marking 100 years since the start of the First World War.

The next issue of the paper won’t come out until August 25th but you can keep checking back at unitystories.com for RCMP reports, NSRBL updates and other news during the break.

Upcoming paper

With a significant summer storm hitting Saskatchewan at Luseland, Unity and areas July 17, next week’s issue of the Unity Wilkie Press-Herald has a full-length article and plenty of photo coverage on damage done. Not covered in the article is that some rural homes south of Unity did not have power restored until close to noon July 18. In the Town of Unity itself power was out from sometime after 4 pm until 1 am in the morning.

Along with storm coverage, you will find:

  • an article and photos on baseball teams winning provincial championships;
  • an article and photos from Drowning Prevention Week activities at the swimming pool;
  • two articles from court in Unity SK July 21 – results of drug possession charges and an update on the animal cruelty charges regarding the Scott horses;
  • a songwriting competition, senior Cardinals’ playoff update, ads for August events including the re-opening of Cinema Satellite (see the unitystories calendar page for more info), the RCMP report and more.

Enjoy and be informed!

With another storm threatening July 23, the fence line at the Cardinals’ home playoff game was unusually empty as can be seen in this photo of Francis Kiefer on the pitcher’s mound.

Blake, Rhett and the AAA Pirates

Blake Robertson and Rhett Feser of Unity, Saskatchewan, play baseball with the Northwest Prairie Pirates, based in Lloydminster. The Pirates compete in the Saskatchewan Premier Baseball League, the highest calibre midget AA/AAA baseball league in the province.

In front of some 200 local fans, the Pirates hosted a double-header at Unity July 8, against the Saskatoon Diamondbacks. Dan Feser, Rhett’s father, said the Saskatoon coach was so impressed by the fan turnout, he wants to return to play at Unity again next year!

The teams split the games, with the Pirates winning the first one and the D-Backs winning the second. Enjoy these scenes from the afternoon and evening games on what was a perfect day to come out and watch a ball game – warm, sunny and not too windy. For more information and additional photos, see the July 14 issue of the Unity Wilkie Press-Herald.

Western Days this weekend in Unity – something for everyone

There will be something for everyone, as usual, at this year’s Western Days event in Unity, Saskatchewan.

Tonight, leave the cooking to the Westen chefs and enjoy a roast beef supper – all ages welcome – and find out who Unity’s Citizen of the Year is. 5:30 pm at the Agroplex.

Later on, take part in, or at least watch, the spirited bidding for the hats of the Local Celebrity Cow Riders and relax – or dance – to the music of HillBilly Blunt Revisited and Lonely J.

Tomorrow, Saturday, come on downtown for lunch. The Unity and District Chamber of Commerce will be manning the barbecue on 2nd Avenue, just east of Main Street, from 11 am on. Have lunch, check out the stores and then stake out your spot on the sidewalk for the annual parade, scheduled to start at 1 pm from the Unity Community Centre.

Unity Western Days parade

(See the Unity Credit Union ad on the last page of the May 26 Press-Herald for the parade route, but please note the parade will actually follow the route in reverse order!)

After the parade, you’ll have time for a siesta, some yardwork or shopping before the rodeo itself starts out at the rodeo grounds at 5:30 pm. This family-friendly entertainment will include cowgirls racing at top speed, directing their horses around barrels,  cowboys vying for the fastest calf roping times and the heart-stopping spills and chills of both bull and bronc riding.

The rodeo will include your friends and neighbours risking … well, maybe not life and limb, but probably limbs! … as they try to last eight seconds on an angry, bucking cow, determined to see its would-be rider face first in the arena dirt!

Unity Western Days, 2013

Participating in the Celebrity Cow Riding event this year are last year’s champion, Jaylon Kuhn, Miners’ Bob Davey and Michael and Adam Shirley, lady rider Shelby Ordynas and Trevor Senger, Cody Bosch, Kevin Martin and Dan Feser, along with some more of the Kuhn brothers.

Later leave the kids with a babysitter and come kick up your heels to the music of Longshot at the Western Days Cabaret Saturday evening, 9 pm to 2 am.

And don’t forget to buy your tickets from one of the four girls running for Rodeo Queen.

You don’t have to cook much this weekend! The Unity Baptist Church is providing a free pancake breakfast out at the grounds Sunday morning. Entertainment starts at 10:30 am, followed by breakfast at 11:45.

The weather forecast looks wonderful for the weekend, so chances are you can bask in the sun Sunday afternoon as you take in the second day of rodeo events, including the finals for the local Celebrity Cow Riders. Grab supper at the booth and you won’t even have to cook when you get home from the fun Western Days weekend!
