UNITY SK REPORTS

Members assisted Child and Family Services in dealing with a matter.

Unity RCMP assisted Camrose Police Service in obtaining a statement from an individual in the detachment area.

Members assisted Kerrobert Ambulance with a patient.

Police received a report of damage to the back window of a truck. It is unknown at this time if the damage was intentionally done by a person.

RCMP charged a 25-year-old male with failing to comply with a probation order when they noted him walking with an individual that he was on conditions to have no contact with.

Police responded to a break and enter at a Husky Energy battery near Evesham, Saskatchewan. This matter is still under investigation.

Members assisted Leipzig Serenity Retreat with a patient.

There were also four traffic complaints and three false alarms.

When someone, who is not a regular advertiser and does not represent a known business in one of our local or area communities, calls the Unity-Wilkie Press-Herald to place an advertisement, one way to check the authenticity and genuineness of the caller is to ask for credit card information. Then the cost of the ad is charged upfront, before the ad runs in the paper.

Another standard safeguard is to ensure we have complete contact information, including a snail mail address and a telephone number.

In late August, a “John ***”  wanted to run an ad In the Press-Herald for a customer service rep, offering a monthly salary of $3,290. Applicants were to contact him by email.

“John” was ready to provide credit card information as soon as we could come up with the price. A local street address in Unity, SK and a 306-228- phone number were given.

A few details, such as someone in the background telling the man on the phone what to say, made the Press-Herald staff suspicious. A reverse lookup of the telephone number found that it belonged to a resident we know. When we called him, he knew nothing about the ad or the John who had called our office.

More than likely, had the ad run, anyone applying for the advertised position would have been asked for their bank account information – supposedly for deposit of paycheques but really so the scammers could drain whatever funds the person already had in there. As well, ithey may have planned to use the names, addresses and SIN numbers of applicants in an identity theft scheme.

The incident was reported to the police, and we have since learned of attempts by the culprits to run the same or similar ads in other Saskatchewan newspapers.

Remember to never, ever give out bank account or other financial information to someone you do not know and have not thoroughly researched!

Note: We are not using “John’s” last name online as the name may belong to some innocent man somewhere whose identity and credit card information were stolen.

UNITY SK REPORTS

RCMP received a complaint from a concerned family member over concerns an elderly relative was defrauded in the sale of property. This matter is still under investigation.

There was a complaint of individuals shooting guns at the old school grounds in Senlac, Saskatchewan. Members located an individual who may have been shooting in the area and warned him that it is not safe to shoot guns in that location.

Police received a request to locate an individual. Individual was located safe.

There was a report of a person in Unity SK who locked their keys in the vehicle and needed help to retrieve them. This is not a police matter, but members assisted them in contacting a tow-company to have them unlock the vehicle.

RCMP received a missing person report but the subject of the complaint was located.

Police issued a 60-day licence suspension and a three-day vehicle impound during a traffic stop when they noted the vehicle driver showed signs of impairment. The 20-year-old male became confrontational with members and was arrested for disturbing the peace but no charges were laid.

RCMP received a report of a neighbour dispute.

There were also four false alarms, two traffic complaints and one noise complaint.

UNITY SK REPORTS for July 29 to August 11, 2014

RCMP received a report of a vehicle that almost hit a train in a rural area near Unity. The male jumped out of the vehicle but the vehicle did not hit the train. The individual and the vehicle were gone when police arrived.

Police received a report of items stolen from a vehicle parked outside a business. No suspects have been identified at this time.

Vehicles have been reported speeding through the town of Senlac. Police will patrol the area more often.

An abandoned vehicle parked on Highway 14 near Macklin was towed as it had been there for several days and was a traffic hazard. Police located and notified the registered owner of the vehicle.

RCMP received a report of a vehicle hitting flower pots and a gas meter. Police located the suspect. This matter is still under investigation.

There was a report of three horses not receiving adequate care near Macklin. Police attended the site and noted that there was plenty of food and water available for the animals.

There was a fire alarm at a residence in Unity. Unity fire department dealt with the matter. No need for police presence.

Police seized a firearm during a traffic stop as the firearm was stored in the vehicle and no one in the vehicle had a valid possession and acquisition licence. The firearm was returned to the owner after a valid PAL was shown to police.

RCMP received a complaint of disturbing the peace. No charges laid.

There was a report of criminal harassment but it was unfounded.

Police received a complaint of an impaired driver near Senlac. Members attended but the vehicle was gone on arrival.

There was a report of a break and enter at the Delta Co-op Service Centre. This matter is still under investigation.

There was one false 911 call, two traffic complaints and one false alarm.

RCMP seeking information regarding three separate incidents

The Unity/Wilkie/Macklin RCMP are requesting the public’s assistance with two ongoing investigations.

The most recent incident was a theft of tools which occurred some time overnight Friday, Aug. 22 to Saturday, Aug. 23 at Landis, Saskatchewan.

The suspect(s) entered a vehicle parked at a farm lot adjacent to the Grid Road 656 in Landis and stole over $5,000 worth of tools, including 10 battery powered and electric impact drivers, a blue 1500 watt generator, a black 3000 watt generator and a black battery charger/ engine booster, among other items. The majority of the tools were Dewalt, Makita or Mastercraft brand.

Earlier this month, specifically Monday, August 18, at around 3 a.m., a lone suspect gained access into a convenience store in Macklin, Saskatchewan, breaking the main entrance’s glass door using a crowbar. The suspect stole over 1,000 packs of cigarettes worth approximately $12,000.

This suspect is described as a heavier set male who was wearing grey sweatpants, a black or dark coloured sweater, a camouflage hat and white gloves. The suspect was driving what appeared to be a mid-2000s white four-door pickup truck.

Immediately to the north of Unity, Saskatchewan, Cut Knife RCMP are also seeking public assistance, with the investigation of a mischief. The incident occurred between Saturday, Aug. and Wednesday, Aug. 13, at the Clayton McLain Memorial  Museum campground in Cut Knife where unknown suspect(s) displaced a railway push cart and overturned a dumpster.

RCMP Report, July 22 to 28

UNITY SK REPORTS

RCMP received a complaint of fraud after a female received a phone call from an individual claiming to be her grandson in need of money. The complainant did not send any money.  Residents are reminded not to respond to this type of scam.

Police attended a vac truck roll over on Highway 17 north of Macklin, Saskatchewan. There were no injuries. No charges were laid.

There was a traffic collision involving two vehicles on 3rd Avenue in Unity. There were no injuries. The driver of one vehicle was charged with failing to yield the right of way at an uncontrolled Intersection.

RCMP received a complaint of a break and enter into a residence garage. Police made patrols but could not locate a suspect.

There was a break and enter at a Husky Energy battery site north of Macklin. This matter is still under investigation.

Police received a complaint of a traffic collision at Denzil. This matter is still under investigation.

Members issued a 72-hour roadside suspension to the driver of a vehicle after a traffic stop was initiated. Members also executed a warrant for Saskatoon Police Services to the passenger of the vehicle.

RCMP attended a complaint of an altercation at the Sunrise Hotel. A 25-year-old Unity male, Dewayne RAWLINSON ,was charged with disturbing the peace, two counts of resisting a Peace Officer, and five counts of failing to comply with a probation order.  A 20-year-old Unity female was also charged with assault a Police Officer and resisting a Peace Officer.  RAWLINSON was held in custody and sentenced to 30 days in jail, along with a $400 fine.

There was a noise complaint.  embers spoke to the subject of complaint.

Police received a complaint of a suspicious person behind Our Drug Store. Member attended but the individual was gone on arrival.

RCMP received a complaint of four youth seen on top of Unity Composite High School.  he youth were located and arrested for mischief but no charges were laid as they were released to their parents.

Members executed a warrant to an individual in Unity for Warman RCMP and Saskatoon Police Services.

Police received a complaint of an assault. This matter is still under investigation.

There were also three traffic complaints and one false 911 call.

RCMP always recruiting, hosting youth camp

The Royal Canadian Mounted Police offers meaningful work, vast opportunities, the chance to serve across Canada and a career like no other. The RCMP is always recruiting and we are looking for people from all walks of life to join Canada’s national police service.

As part of the RCMP’s recruiting efforts, recruiters in Alberta, Saskatchewan, Manitoba, Northwest Territories and Nunavut have partnered with the RCMP Academy, “Depot” Division, to send 32 high-school students to the fourth annual youth camp for one week in August. Students were selected based on academic achievement and their interest in a career in policing. They will learn what it’s like to be a police officer in training through activities such as drill, driver simulation training, and tours of the RCMP Academy and the RCMP Heritage Centre.

The RCMP Youth Camp supports the RCMP’s National Youth Strategy, which aims to increase youth awareness and influence youth behaviour through behaviour modeling, mentoring, active learning, and engaging youth to positively influence their peers, school, and community.

The RCMP Youth Camp runs from August 11 through August 15, 2014. Recruiters from across the Prairies and from the North and RCMP Academy instructors will join the students and will serve as mentors, teachers, and role models.

UNITY SK REPORTS

RCMP received a complaint of a parent having difficulties dealing with a youth. Police contacted Saskatchewan Child and Family Services.

Police received a report of an abandoned hay bind on a rural road. This matter is still under investigation as members are attempting to locate the owner of the farm machinery.

A member investigated the report of an electrical transformer exploding during the recent storm. There was no fire at the transformer but police contacted SaskPower about the loss of power.

Police received a call about water running across Highway 31 between Luseland and Denzil. Members contacted the Saskatchewan Department of Highways.

RCMP attended a single vehicle rollover north of Unity. The vehicle driver sustained minor injuries. The collision was due to poor road conditions.

Members attended a residence to assist with a family disagreement.

Police received a complaint of a gas and dash at a local gas station. Members made patrols but the vehicle could not be located.

RCMP received a complaint of gunshots near a rural residence. Members attended and spoke to other rural residents who heard loud bangs but did not believe that the noise was gunshots. No individuals with firearms were located.

Police received a report of a semi driving very slowly past a residence on several occasions. Members located the semi driver who was just practice driving.

Members patrolled in search of a black truck that was continuously driving into a rural yard. The vehicle was not located.

There were also two false 911 calls, three false alarms and one traffic complaint.

UNITY SK REPORTS

There were two reports of stolen bicycles. Both bicycles were located and a female youth was charged for possession of property obtained by crime.

A cellphone was turned into the Unity detachment. RCMP located the owner who picked the cellphone up at the detachment.

RCMP received a complaint of impaired driving. Police patrolled, located the vehicle, and charged a 31-year-old Red Deer male with impaired operation of a motor vehicle.

CN Police reported a railway crossing arm malfunction and a broken railway crossing arm.

Member attended a grass fire by a rural residence. Fire not suspicious in nature.

Police received a report of a break and enter at Landis Co-op Store. This matter is still under investigation.

RCMP received a complaint of an individual behaving erratically. A member transported the individual to Battlefords Union Hospital for assessment.

Police received a complaint of uttering threats but it was unfounded.

There were also three traffic complaints and one false fire alarm at a residence.

UNITY SK REPORTS

Police received a report of the theft of a truck but it was unfounded.

There was a report of an abandoned vehicle but it was gone when police arrived.

A member checked the welfare of an individual after RCMP received a report that he needed medical assistance. The individual was located and was fine.

RCMP received a complaint of disturbing the peace but the complainant declined to lay charges.

A member served a summons to an individual in the area for the City of Saskatoon and a subpoena to another individual for the Red Deer RCMP.

There was a traffic collision between a vehicle and a semi on 1st Avenue East in Unity. There were no injuries.

RCMP received a complaint of youth sitting on the roof of the curling rink. This matter is still under investigation.

A bike was located in a back alley. The owner has not been located.

Police are investigating an assault between two females in a rural area. A 50-year-old Unity area female was charged with assault.

RCMP responded to a farm accident at a rural residence where a youth slipped and got his foot caught in an auger.

A 68-year-old Unity male was charged with impaired operation of a motor vehicle when police initiated a traffic stop.

There was a noise complaint at Suffern Lake.

Police executed a warrant for Saskatoon Police Services to a driver of a vehicle. The driver was also issued three traffic tickets and the vehicle was towed as the driver did not have a valid driver’s licence.

A 42-year-old Unity male was charged with failing to comply with an undertaking when police located him at a residence that he was not to attend according to the conditions of his undertaking.

A 43-year-old Unity male was charged with failing to comply with an undertaking when police located him at a drinking establishment knowing he was on conditions not to be in a place that sells liquor.

RCMP received a complaint that an individual put something in his gas tank. This matter is still under investigation.

Police received a complaint that a vehicle had been moved and had three flat tires. This matter is still under investigation.

There was a complaint of a male in possession of illegal drugs at a drinking establishment. This matter is still under investigation.

CN Police reported a malfunction with the railway crossing arm.

There were two false alarms and one traffic complaint.
