Monday’s paper

Now that the weather has warmed up, is it safe to look back at winter yet? Well next week’s Unity Wilkie Press-Herald does just that, but it also gives us an idea of what we could expect through the rest of March and what authorities are saying about the expected spring runoff. Along with a weather story, Monday’s paper features:

  • A recap of Celebrate Unity, 2014 and all the celebrated people, committees and businesses;
  • Photos and a story about a local version of the Olympic Games;
  • Photos of local “princesses”;
  • UCHS curling results; and
  • A local boy wins a North Stars hockey award!

As always, even the ads provide interesting reading covering such things as land for sale, notices of upcoming annual general meetings, information about investment seminars, thank you ads and job opportunities.

You’ll need your calendar beside you when you read next week’s paper as there are many events coming up next month and beyond! You can find the events listed by clicking on our calendar link above, and read the fine details in the actual paper.

Besides the event details you will find in the advertising,, the March 3 Unity Wilkie Press-Herald features:

  • a wrap up of the Affinity Credit Union Provincial Senior Men’s and Women’s Curling Championships, both in terms of results and impact on the community;
  • a prelude to the Unity Skating Club’s upcoming carnival, At the Movies;
  • a summary of results and where all three area senior men’s hockey teams are at in their respective league playoffs; and
  • a new concept in farm financing – commodity streaming.
Maze, Charteris and Eddingfield

Locals Gary Maze, Wayne Charteris and Daryl Eddingfield, playing with Unity skip Glen Heitt, almost made it to the championship game, falling short by only one point in the semifinal against Al Schick, Brian McCusker, Kerry Gudereit and Jim Loos of the Callie Curling Club of Regina. Horses seized – see Monday’s paper

Four horses from the pasture near Scott have now been seized by the Saskatchewan SPCA. Global, CTV and CBC are also now all covering this story of animal neglect.

Paper preview for February 17th edition

Next week is a big week in Unity with 16 curling teams in town from all over the province, here to compete for the Senior Men’s and Women’s Saskatchewan Championship. Find out who is coming “to rock the house” in next week’s issue of the Press-Herald, along with:

  • details of new recycling fees in Unity;
  • comments and lessons from the panel presentation at UCHS on workplace bullying and harassment;
  • following the hockey career of Luseland’s Jessica Sibley;
  • recap of the Luseland/Dodsland Mallards first round playoff wins;

along with all the regular features such as the RCMP Report, a Faith Matters column, an Olympic-themed Top 10 and food for thought on our editorial page!

  • tips on keeping your kids healthy, as well as an article on the flu which has been making its rounds in our communities;
  • a feature on Si Campbell, who was asked to represent the RCAF at an international air convention in Las Vegas;
  • information on the Unity KidSport committee; and
  • a plea for help from the Unity and District Heritage Museum.

And as always check out the ads for specials at local businesses, job opportunities and upcoming events.

(After Wednesday’s high winds, people reported ice fishing shacks rolling across the lakes of the North West region, flagpoles down, grain bins blown away and other wind-related damage. This farm shelter belt didn’t suffer much damage but the photograph only shows a small portion of the  pine cones from the spruce trees scattered everywhere by the end of the day.)

Christmas issue Monday

“‘Merry Christmas to all and to all a good night!’ And Happy Holidays too,” so say the staff of the Unity-Wilkie Press-Herald. The offices in both Unity and Wilkie will be closed from December 24 to January 2nd, 2014. After Monday’s paper, the next paper will not come out until January 6th, 2014.

In the December 23rd issue, you can expect to see:

  • people sharing Christmas memories;
  • greetings from friends and neighbours who own or work at local businesses;
  • a children’s story and colouring pages;
  • a story on a Swedish farm trainee from the 1970s who returned to Unity for a visit earlier this fall; and
  • just for a change of pace, some thoughts on buying lottery tickets.Happy Holidays!

The Singing Grandpas: Peter Sieben of Kerrobert, Ben Schneider of Tramping Lake and Gabe Kohlman of Major provided cheerful background music for the pleasure of Sunrise Wellness Spa visitors and shoppers during Winter Wonderland events in Unity Dec. 5.

Along with your usual menu of job opportunities, upcoming events and business offerings, next week’s paper will feature:

  • an article on and photos from We Day – the special motivational and inspirational mix of speakers and entertainment geared towards youth, held in Saskatoon, Nov. 6 (scroll down this page for a short video from the event);
  • where were you when JFK was assassinated in Dallas, Texas, 50 years ago? Residents share their memories;
  • a heartwarming story on the connection between a class of Grade 4 students and the seniors who live in Heritage Manor;
  • and an assortment of photos from Remembrance Day services in the Press-Herald reading area.
