Next week’s paper

October 5 to 11 is National Fire Prevention Week and so the October 6th issue of the Unity Wilkie Press-Herald will be the annual Fire Prevention Week issue. Look for photographs of all our firefighters, along with fire prevention tips and information about the Unity and Wilkie fire departments.

Of course, we have other news too! Look for:

  • information on the new virus circulating in Saskatchewan;
  • just before provincials, a wrap-up of the schools’ cross-country seasons;
  • an update on Unity golfer Justin Wood; and
  • details on a special speaker coming to UCHS – the public is invited.

No lack of things to see and do in and around Unity either – the unitystories calendar has been updated and you can check out the advertisements in next week’s paper if you need further details.

Upcoming paper

Of course the big event this last week for many families was the first day of school! Find out who the new staff are at UCHS, UPS and Luseland School and how enrolment numbers compare to last year in next week’s issue of the Unity Wilkie Press-Herald.

Along with the article, and photos from the first day, you can read about:

  • a Service to Children award given to one of Unity’s long-serving teachers;
  • a major scholarship won by one of this year’s UCHS grads;
  • a reunion at Winter, SK; and you can see
  • photos of locals enjoying the visit of the Family Fun Circus to Unity the last week of August.

More upcoming events are listed in the ads (and the minimum details can also be found by clicking the Calendar tab in the menu at the top of this page).

Even if somehow you had missed all the back-to-school talk or had forgotten when you got up Tuesday morning this week that students would be returning to classes, at St. Peter’s School in Unity, the bikes in the bick rack and the school bus pulled up with lights flashing and its STOP sign out would have let you know school days were here again!

Watch for scam job postings

When someone, who is not a regular advertiser and does not represent a known business in one of our local or area communities, calls the Unity-Wilkie Press-Herald to place an advertisement, one way to check the authenticity and genuineness of the caller is to ask for credit card information. Then the cost of the ad is charged upfront, before the ad runs in the paper.

Another standard safeguard is to ensure we have complete contact information, including a snail mail address and a telephone number.

In late August, a “John ***”  wanted to run an ad In the Press-Herald for a customer service rep, offering a monthly salary of $3,290. Applicants were to contact him by email.

“John” was ready to provide credit card information as soon as we could come up with the price. A local street address in Unity, SK and a 306-228- phone number were given.

A few details, such as someone in the background telling the man on the phone what to say, made the Press-Herald staff suspicious. A reverse lookup of the telephone number found that it belonged to a resident we know. When we called him, he knew nothing about the ad or the John who had called our office.

More than likely, had the ad run, anyone applying for the advertised position would have been asked for their bank account information – supposedly for deposit of paycheques but really so the scammers could drain whatever funds the person already had in there. As well, ithey may have planned to use the names, addresses and SIN numbers of applicants in an identity theft scheme.

The incident was reported to the police, and we have since learned of attempts by the culprits to run the same or similar ads in other Saskatchewan newspapers.

Remember to never, ever give out bank account or other financial information to someone you do not know and have not thoroughly researched!

Note: We are not using “John’s” last name online as the name may belong to some innocent man somewhere whose identity and credit card information were stolen.

Upcoming paper

With a significant summer storm hitting Saskatchewan at Luseland, Unity and areas July 17, next week’s issue of the Unity Wilkie Press-Herald has a full-length article and plenty of photo coverage on damage done. Not covered in the article is that some rural homes south of Unity did not have power restored until close to noon July 18. In the Town of Unity itself power was out from sometime after 4 pm until 1 am in the morning.

Along with storm coverage, you will find:

  • an article and photos on baseball teams winning provincial championships;
  • an article and photos from Drowning Prevention Week activities at the swimming pool;
  • two articles from court in Unity SK July 21 – results of drug possession charges and an update on the animal cruelty charges regarding the Scott horses;
  • a songwriting competition, senior Cardinals’ playoff update, ads for August events including the re-opening of Cinema Satellite (see the unitystories calendar page for more info), the RCMP report and more.

Enjoy and be informed!

With another storm threatening July 23, the fence line at the Cardinals’ home playoff game was unusually empty as can be seen in this photo of Francis Kiefer on the pitcher’s mound.
