UNITY SK RCMP REPORTS for September 20 to 26, 2016

RCMP received a report of stolen fuel from a rural farm yard. There are no suspects at this time.

A 37-year-old male from Reward SK was charged with mischief after police received a complaint of a damaged vehicle.

Members completed a well-being check on an individual at the request of a family friend.

Police attended a single vehicle collision with a train near Taco, Sask. The two vehicle occupants, a 62-year-old female and a 66-year-old male from the Unity area, were pronounced deceased at the scene. This matter is still under investigation.

RCMP received a complaint of assault but the complainant declined to lay charges.

Members are investigating another report of assault.

Members acted as mediators in a neighbour dispute.

A 72-hour roadside suspension was issued to a vehicle driver after he blew a warning when police requested a breath sample during a traffic stop.

Members were requested to keep the peace between two individuals allocating property.

Police received a complaint of damage to a vehicle. This matter is still under investigation.

RCMP received a report of cows on Highway 14 west of Unity. Members herded the cattle off the highway then located the owner who moved them to a pasture.

CN Police reported a railway crossing malfunction at Unity.

Members are investigating a break and enter at the Delta Co-op C-Store.

Police received a report of theft of contents in a swather that had been left in a field for harvest near Senlac, Saskatchewan. This matter is still under investigation.

RCMP received a report of damage to concrete forms left at a property in Unity. This matter is still under investigation.

There were also five false alarms and two traffic complaints.

Fire Prevention Week

With Fire Prevention Week running October 9 to 15 in Canada this year, be sure to check out the October 7 Unity Wilkie Press-Herald for photos of all our volunteer firefighters. You will also find articles and tips on fire safety and prevention.

And did you dream of being a firefighter when you were a kid? It’s not too late! The Unity fire department is recruiting and is hosting a “try it out” session at the fire hall next Saturday, October 15, from 1 to 5 pm.

You are welcome to go and try using a hose as well as taking part in other trials that will be set up. You will also be able to see how the Jaws of Life work.

And then, everyone from 1 to 100 can help out our volunteer fire department with their fundraising efforts by buying a cheeseburger and pop for only $5 between 5 and 7 pm.

UNITY SK RCMP REPORTS for September 13 to 19, 2016

RCMP received a report of damage to a railway crossing gate. Reported for insurance purposes.

Members are investigating a complaint of an individual damaging a vehicle.

Police received a complaint of damage to the windows and doors of the Armada Inn In Unity, Saskatchewan. This matter is still under investigation.

A 24-year-old Unity male was charged with possession of property obtained by crime when police received a report of a stolen bike located in a residence yard.

There was a report of suspicious people loitering in a back alley. Subjects of complaint were gone on arrival.

A 27-year-old Unity male was charged with failing to comply with a probation order, two counts of failing to comply with condition of undertaking and with disturbing the peace when police noted he was out of his residence during curfew and was causing a disturbance.

RCMP received a complaint of a vehicle driving through a gate in Scott, Sask. Members discovered the vehicle had been reported stolen from Wilkie three days earlier.  This matter is still under investigation.

Police received several complaints of an individual going through the contents of a vehicle. These matters are still under investigation.  The RCMP urges residents to lock vehicles and remove the keys and all valuables from inside the vehicle.

Members received a complaint of theft from a motor vehicle. This matter is still under investigation.

There was a report of theft in Denzil SK but it was unfounded.

Members assisted Calgary Police Services with an investigation.

A debit card was found at the Unity Golf Course. It was returned to the local bank to locate the owner.

Police received a complaint of theft from a motor vehicle. This matter is still under investigation.

RCMP completed a wellbeing check on an individual at the request of family members.

Police received a report of a combine on fire near Unity. No police action required.

Members received a complaint of a loud party at a residence. Members attended and spoke with the subject of complaint.  There were no further issues.

RCMP attended the sudden death of a 42-year-old Unity male. The death was not suspicious in nature.

A 27-year-old Unity male was charged with four counts of failing to comply with an undertaking, mischief, and resisting a peace officer when police located him standing in the roadway and obstructing motorists.

There was also one false 911 call, one traffic complaint and one false alarm.

RCMP received a report of a truck and trailer parked in front of a residence. Member contacted owner who confirmed it was not stolen and agreed to move it.

An individual turned in a wallet to the RCMP. The wallet was returned to the owner.

Police received a complaint of theft. This matter is still under investigation.

A semi drove through a railway crossing, breaking the activated crossing arm. This matter is still under investigation.

RCMP received a complaint of an individual riding a bike and blocking traffic. Members located the subject of complaint and issued a verbal warning.

Members received a complaint of a stolen truck in Senlac, Sask., but it was unfounded.

There was also one false 911 call.

UNITY SK RCMP REPORTS for August 30 to September 5, 2016

RCMP seized drug paraphernalia and a small amount of cannabis marijuana during a traffic stop. No charges were laid due to the small amount of the drug.

Members received a request from a family member to complete a well-being check on an individual. The complainant later called back to say a family friend had located the individual who was fine.

There was a report of a break and enter into a business in Denzil, Sask. This matter is still under investigation.

Police received a complaint of theft of fuel from a local gas station. Members located the subject of complaint who returned to pay for the fuel. No charges were laid.

There were also two false alarms, one false 911 call and one traffic complaint.

Nominations for mayor and council close next week

All council positions are up for re-election this year. Nomination forms are available at the town office and must be returned before 4 p.m. next Wednesday, September 21.

The Town of Unity needs people to serve their community by serving on council. (NOTE – local RMs will also be having elections and the nomination deadline there is also September 21.)

To be eligible to run for council – whether as a councillor or for mayor – you must be 18 years of age on or before election day, Oct. 26, a Canadian citizen and have lived in Unity for at least three months and in Saskatchewan for six months.

The Town of Unity has passed a bylaw also requiring criminal record checks to be done and filed with the nomination papers.

The most important issues councils make decisions on are core services such as roads and streets, water treatment and sewer facilities, snow and garbage removal, recreation facilities and programs, land use planning and economic development, building code regulations, crime fighting and prevention, fire fighting and prevention, animal control and emergency planning.

Remember council sets the policies and priorities but they don’t have to do the day-to-day work; municipal staff members are the ones who have to follow through and ensure council’s directives are implemented.

You don’t have to have education or experience in a government setting to run as a candidate. Everyone has unique skills, knowledge and experience which can help guide the decision-making process. All you need is a willingness to get involved, learn and an ability to work with others.

Volunteering and other community involvement, work experience, membership in different organizations and even managing family life can all provide relevant experience for serving on council.

Each council member brings his or her own perspective, and that of the demographic he or she belongs to, to the decision-making table. It’s best for our town when our council reflects the demographics of the town.

As a council member, you can influence changes that benefit your community, put forward new ideas, provide a voice for your community and make a positive difference in the quality of life.

Remember, nomination forms can now be picked up at municipal offices and the deadline to submit a nomination is 4 p.m. September 21.

RCMP Report for August 23 to 29

UNITY SK RCMP REPORTS for August 23 to 29, 2016

RCMP Members acted as mediators in a family dispute.

Members warned an individual about not complying with conditions of an undertaking.

Police received a Mental Health Act complaint. The individual was transported the Unity hospital for assessment.

There was a report of an intoxicated individual creating a disturbance and throwing property onto a residence lawn. Members removed the subject of complaint from the residence and transported her to another residence to remain until sober. No charges were laid.

RCMP received a report of an abandoned vehicle in a field. The vehicle was registered to a farmer who was working in the field.

CN Police reported a damaged railway crossing. Reported for information purposes.

Members received a report of theft of scrap metal. The subject of complaint was located and warned. No charges were laid.

Police received a complaint of garbage on Highway 14. Members located the owners of the garbage who cleaned up the mess. No charges were laid.

There was a complaint of trailer sewage dumped on the street but it was unfounded.

A 27-year-old male from Unity, Sask., was charged with four counts of failing to comply with an undertaking and one count of failing to comply with probation order when members received a complaint of an individual walking on the railroad tracks.
