Our page layout people did a fabulous job of creating a Western look for the May 18th issue of the Unity Wilkie Press-Herald, all in honour of this week’s Unity Western Days. As for content, you will find:

  • an introduction to the five girls running for rodeo queen;
  • a list of the locals brave enough to throw their hats in the ring for Celebrity “Bull” Riding;
  • photos from and a write-up on  the Unity Sports Wall of Fame induction ceremonies May 9; and
  • results from the UCHS junior high track meet.

Add in the editorial page, a Western Days Top 10, judges’ comments on the Press-Herald from the Saskatchewan newspapers’ awards night and the RCMP report and everyone should find something of interest in their local community newspaper!

Canada Road Safety Week

May 12-18, 2015 will mark Canada Road Safety Week, a national campaign aimed at making Canada’s roads the safest in the world. Motorists are reminded to drive safe and be alert this long weekend as they begin their summer travels.

The Unity/Wilkie/Macklin RCMP detachment will be actively supporting this traffic safety initiative. Expect to see police officers out and about conducting traffic stops pursuant to The Saskatchewan Traffic Safety Act this week.

Sgt. Grant Rusk also wants “to remind the motoring public that the speed limit when passing — both oncoming and overtaking stopped on roadside — emergency vehicles with their lights activated is 60 kilometres an hour. Tickets for violations of this speed limit start at $210 plus a $60 victim surcharge.

The tagline for Canada Road Safety week is “Drive safe. The life you save may be your own!” Drivers are encouraged to be sober and alert, ensure occupants are buckled up and children properly secured, remain focused on their driving and not be distracted when behind the wheel and to obey posted speed limits.

B&E, theft at residence on Jubilee Bay

Unity SK RCMP are requesting the public’s assistance in locating the person(s) responsible for a break enter and theft from a Unity residence on Jubilee Bay that occurred between the morning of Monday, May 4, and the evening of Tuesday, May 5, 2015

Suspects broke into a home while the homeowner was away. The suspects caused extensive damage to the residence and the homeowners’ personal property. A large flat screen TV, some jewelry and other valuables were taken.

Persons with information about crimes being committed are urged to call the Unity RCMP detachment at 306-228-6300; the Wilkie RCMP at 306-843-3480; or the Macklin RCMP at 306-753-2171. If you wish to remain anonymous, you may also call Saskatchewan Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477, or *8477 on the SaskTel Mobility Network. Crime Stoppers will pay up to $2,000 for information which leads to the arrest of person(s) responsible for any serious crime. RCMP Reports April 14 to 20

UNITY SK RCMP REPORTS, April 14 to 20, 2015

RCMP received a report of a missing person. The 85-year-old Wilkie man was later located by police following a driving complaint near Cut Knife, Saskatchewan. The man was taken to hospital for assessment. The male will also be facing charges of driving while disqualified.

Police received a complaint of an individual driving a quad down a back alley and splashing mud all over a residence fence. This matter is still under investigation.

There was a report of theft of tools from an oil lease southwest of Denzil, SK. Two fluid guns worth $30,000, along with their manuals, were stolen from a locked trailer. The thefts occurred between April 4 and April 15. This matter is still under investigation.

CN Police reported a railway crossing arm malfunction in Unity.

RCMP received a complaint of theft of a vehicle from Denzil. This matter is still under investigation.

Police received two reports of individuals receiving phone calls from their own phone numbers. Members spoke to the complainants about telemarketers who utilize computer programs to use local numbers to call people in order to have residents answer their telephones. Information was sent to the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre. Callers are reminded to call *57 to trace any incoming calls they receive that they believe to be criminal in nature. *57 must be used before the next incoming call is received.

Police received a complaint that a caller was contacted by a person claiming to be affiliated with the Canada Revenue Agency that claiming that the resident would be arrested if he/she did not provide financial information to them immediately over the phone. Information was sent to the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre. Callers are reminded to call *57 to trace any incoming calls they receive that they believe to be criminal in nature. *57 must be used before the next incoming call is received.

Members acted as mediators between a couple having an argument.

There were also two false alarms.

While we can’t bring you the sounds of Unity’s 89th Music Festival, we can bring you some of the sights at Sunday’s showcase performance, a report and a list of award winners. Look for those in the May 1st issue of the Unity Wilkie Press-Herald, along with:

  • reminders from our bylaw officer as to what he will be on the lookout for in yards now that the snow has melted;
  • the first Saskatchewan crop report of the year; and
  • an interesting story on national insect research that the Grade 6 class at St. Peter’s is helping out with.

Of course, there’s also the RCMP report, thank you’s from community members, in memoriams, an obituary and ads for upcoming events.

Big game draw opens today, May 1

Saskatchewan’s big game draw opens online May 1 and hunters have until midnight June 2 to submit their online application.  Early applications are recommended.

The big game draw is a transparent and equitable method of allocating a limited number of hunting licences to Saskatchewan residents.  This year’s draw includes licences for elk, moose, either-sex mule deer and antlerless mule deer.

“Saskatchewan’s spectacular natural resources provide ample recreational opportunities for outdoor enthusiasts, including big game hunting,” Environment Minister Scott Moe said.  “This year, the big game draw moves to our province’s automated hunting, angling and trapping licence (HAL) system.   I encourage all hunters to apply early to ensure adequate time to familiarize themselves with the new process.”

The 2015 big game draw will be administered through HAL, including submitting, reviewing and updating an application, checking pool status history and purchasing a draw licence.  These changes help to streamline and simplify the process.

Customers can also verify their residency status through a new online feature.  It is recommended that Saskatchewan customers use this feature to verify their residency status before attempting to purchase a licence, or apply for the big game draw so that any errors in their information can be resolved.  Customers may contact the Active Network call centre at 1-855-848-4773 or a ministry office for assistance with issues related to their account information.

Saskatchewan residents who are sponsoring a Canadian resident in the Canadian resident white-tailed deer draw must have a HAL account.

If hunters are successful in the big game draw, the appropriate licence will be available for purchase on their HAL account.  Hunters can simply select the licences they want to purchase and complete the transaction.
